With an aim to stop human trafficking and to save the lives of migrants UN Security Council adopted a resolution authorizing European Union (EU) and individual countries to cope with this humanitarian crisis on the high seas of Libya.
- Resolution was supported by 14 members except Venezuela who remain abstained.
- The resolution was adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter which allows the use of force and nations to inspect ships, sieze and dispose of vessels in case of any suspicious activity regarding smuggling of migrants.
- This resolutions will be valid for one year.
EU countries had also launched second phase of Operation Sophia to monitor traffickers.
