Legendary tabla player Shankar Ghosh died at the age of 80 due to pneumonia, cardiac problems and old age complications.
  • Recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award was the creator of the all-drum orchestra Music of the Drums – later called the Calcutta Drum Orchestra.
  • He was also conferred with ITC Sangeet Research Academy award andUstad Hafiz Ali Khan award.
Apart from India, he was also collaborated with international artists like Greg Ellis, Pete Lockett and John Bergamo.

In collaboration with Yes Bank and MasterCard, the wallet company FreeCharge launched a “FreeCharge Go”, a virtual card that allows users to pay for goods and services at online shops and offline retailers.
  • This new virtual card would enable users to use money in their digital walletson any merchant site that accepts cards.
  • Currently, FreeCharge Go can be used to transact at certain offline stores such as McDonald’s and Shoppers Stop.

Indian Bureau of Mines & NRSC inked MoU for monitoring mining activity

In a bid to monitor mining activity through satellite technology, Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) inked MoU with National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the Department of Space.
  • As a part of MoU IBM would initiate remote sensing cell under the technical guidance of the NRSC at its offices in Nagpur and Hyderabad.
  • The cell will utilise Bhuvan-based services for monitoring mining activities for development of mobile app for field data collection.
The pilot project will be launched in Odisha and Hospet sector of Karnataka to demonstrate the feasibility of using high resolution satellite imagery in monitoring the changes over a period of time in select group of mines.

The head of a Hindu deity’s statue is reattached to its body after 130 years. It was taken from the Phnom Da temple in southern Takeo territory by French researchersin 1882-1883.
  • The head was reattached after a ceremony at the National Museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
  • The stone statue is of Harihara, an idol that combines aspects of Vishnu and Shiva.
The statue represents the two most important gods in the Hindu pantheon who representthe creation of the universe and its destruction.

  • Ajit Chandila was found guilty of misconduct and corruption under the Articles 2.1.1, Article 2.1.2, Article 2.1.3, Article 2.1.4, Article 2.2.2, Article 2.2.3, and Article 2.4.1 of the BCCI Anti-Corruption Code.
  • BCCI also decided to hand a five-year suspension on Mumbai batsman Hiken Shah for making a corrupt approach to a fellow player.
The decision in this regard was taken at the Disciplinary Committee of the BCCI which was held in Mumbai. The committee was headed by BCCI President Shashank Manohar.

French President Francois Hollande has declared “a state of economic emergency” by announcing that it’s time to redefine France’s economic and social model.

Aim: Ensuring quick response to people’s grievances wherein they can dial toll-free number ‘1100’ at any point of time in the day.
Highlights:
  • Details of the callers and the issues reported would be registered on computer and referred to the relevant department for action through e-mail, SMS and telephone.
  • Equipped with latest technology like Computer Telephony Integration and Voice Logger System.
*Jayalalithaa is fondly addressed as ‘Amma’ (mother) by her supporters.
Current initiatives:‘Amma Canteens’ which provide subsidisedfood, and ‘Amma Mineral Water’.

Target: To promote the culture of innovation among its undergraduate students right from their first year.
M N Faruqui Innovations Centre was launched by ArjunMalhotra(Co-founder of HCL Technologies) comprising a Design Facility and Tinkering Laboratory.
  1. Design Facility supports a meeting, brainstorming and conferencing centre with Computing and Information Technology
  2. Tinkering Labhas collaborative conferencing tools, 3D printers, a mechanical workshop with fabrication machinery, electronics workbenches, PCB fabrication set-ups, and prototyping tools for embedded systems.

Provide access to answer sheets at Rs 2 per page: CIC

The Central Information Commission has ruled the Universities and examining bodies for not to charge more than Rs 2 per page for providing copies of evaluated answer scripts to students.
  • Derivatives are issued to the University Grants Commission and Association of Indian Universities, to circulate, publicise and insist on implementation of this order in all academic and examining bodies.
The decision in regard has been taken when a student Abne Ingty was asked to pay Rs 750 per paper to have his own answer-sheets. That high fee for a copy of answer book was breaching the sections 3, 6 and 7 of the RTI Act.

National Conference on “Sustainable Agriculture, Farmer’s Welfare”

The two-day National Conference on “Sustainable Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare”was chaired in Sikkim. The conference will be attended by state government representatives, scientists, academicians, bankers, experts and practitioners.
  • PM Narendra Modi was the chief guest at the plenary session of the conference.
  • “Organic Farming Festival” was also organized to give more impetus to Organic Farming.
The two day National Conference on Sustainable Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare deliberated upon the challenges and identify initiatives to transform agriculture based on sustainable and efficient use of resources like soil and water, remunerative prices on farm producerisk coverage and reduction of potential negative impact of climate change.

Noted Punjabi folk singer Manpreet Akhtar passed away due to brain hemorrhage at a local hospital in Patiala. She was 55.
About  Manpreet Akhtar :
  • Manpreet was the sister of famous Punjabi singer Dilshad Akhtar.
  • Manpreet was known for her classical style of singing and she sang songs in Punjabi and Hindi movies.
  • Some of her famous Punjabi songs were “Beriye Ni”, “Nikdi sui” and “Bas Ek Gera Gidhe Vich”. She also sang “Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aye” in Bollywood movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”.

Former Sikkim Governor and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ventrapragada Rama Rao died at a private hospital at the age of  81.
About Ventrapragada Rama Rao:
  • Rama Rao was born in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh in 1935.
  • Rao was a lawyer and practised at the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
  • He was elected as MLC on four occasions in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State Legislature. While he served for three full terms in 1966, 1972 and 1978, the Legislative Council was abolished during his fourth term after his election from Graduates Constituency in 1984. During his last term, he served as party floor leader in the Council. He was also imprisoned during Emergency.
  • Rao, who joined the Jan Sangh in 1956, was BJP national vice-president. He was twice State unit chief in united Andhra Pradesh from 1992-96. He also was a member of the BJP national executive and more recently a member of the core committee of the Telangana BJP.
  • He served as Sikkim Governor from October 25, 2002 to October 25, 2007.

  • Hungarian Attila Czebe stood as runner up (2 lakh) and Ukraine’s Valeriy Neverov (Rs. 1 lakh) placed at third position.
M.R. Lalith Babu justified his presence in the event as the highest-rated Indian and defeated Ukraine’s Yuri Solodovnichenko in 68 moves to be at the fourth spot with 7.5 points.
