Communist Party of Nepal -Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) chairman Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli elected as the new Prime Minister of Nepal with huge majority votes by defeating Sushil Koirala. With this KP Sharma became the first PM under the newly adopted constitution of Nepal.
KP Sharma was backed by UCPN-Maoist, Rashtriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Democratic and 13 fringe parties and bagged 338 votes whereas Sushil Koirala supported by four Madhes parties in the United Democratic Madhesi Front and had secured 249votes.
Positioning of Mr. Sharma as PM was declared by Parliament Speaker Subhash Nembang.
- Oli was a Naxalite arrested in 1972, convicted in sedition charge and spent 14 years in prison.
- In 1991 when Nepal adopted multi-party democracy he was elected as Member of Parliament.
- From 1994-1995 he served as the Home Minister.
- In 2006 he became the deputy PM.
