Government decides to directly shift from BS-IV to BS-VI Emission norms

Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has decided to directly shift from BS-IV to BS-VI Emission norms directly by 01.04.2020 to address the issue of vehicular pollution.
  • A unanimous decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari.
In BS-V, vehicles have to be fitted with a diesel particulate filter, which needs to be optimised for Indian road conditions. In stage VI, selective catalytic reduction technology has to be optimised.
About Bharat stage emission standards
Bharat stage emission standards are emission standards based on European regulations instituted by GOI in 2000 to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engine equipment, including motor vehicles.
  • The standards and the timeline for implementation are set by the Central Pollution Control Board under the Ministry of Environment & Forests and climate change.
  • Since October 2010, Bharat stage III norms have been enforced across the country.
  • In 13 major citiesBharat stage IV emission norms have been in place since April 2010.
